Go Back Up

Give Your People Their Jobs Back

Who Is Really Running Your IT Right Now?

In most organizations without a formal IT department, the answer is somebody whose job title says something else entirely.
It is the operations manager who is good with computers. The controller who owns the Microsoft 365 tenant because nobody else would. The founder who still holds the domain registrar login. They are capable people doing a job they were never hired for, at the expense of the job they were.

That arrangement works until it does not. It fails at the backup nobody tested, the departing employee whose access was never revoked, the insurance renewal that asks questions nobody can answer, and the Tuesday morning when the server does not come back up.

Fully managed IT replaces the arrangement with an accountable team. Not to take control away from your people, but to give them their actual jobs back.

Clear Ownership

What Compass Manages, and What Stays With You

Ambiguity is what makes IT support frustrating. Fully managed means the line is drawn once, in writing, and Compass sits on the operational side of it.
Comparison of the IT responsibilities CompassMSP manages and the decisions your organization retains.

Give Your IT a Clear Plan.

Your team has enough on its plate. Talk with Compass about fully managed IT that connects everyday support, ongoing maintenance, and technology planning around your business priorities.

Dedicated vCIO Guidance, Turn IT Priorities Into a Plan

CompassMSP fully managed IT services include a dedicated virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) to connect your technology roadmap, IT budget, and business goals. Your vCIO helps you prioritize investments and plan improvements, with clear recommendations your leadership team can act on.

Technology Roadmap & Lifecycle Planning

Your vCIO builds and maintains a technology roadmap covering hardware refreshes, software renewals, and end-of-life migrations. Recommendations align with your budget cycles and business priorities, helping you plan replacements before aging systems disrupt work.

IT Budget Forecasting & Business Cases

Your vCIO forecasts technology spending and develops business cases for proposed investments. Leadership gets the expected costs, business benefits, and trade-offs needed to decide what to fund now and what can wait.

Quarterly Business Reviews

Business reviews connect service performance with business impact. Your vCIO reviews support trends, uptime, response times, project progress, and technology risks, then uses those findings to update priorities and the roadmap.

Technical Debt Prioritization

Your vCIO identifies aging hardware, unsupported software, and recurring problems that increase cost or risk. A prioritized improvement plan helps you address the most consequential issues first. Modernization projects are scoped separately from the managed service.

Coordination With Security Advisory

Your vCIO guides technology planning and investment. When your organization needs executive security strategy, governance, or compliance advisory, separately scoped vCISO services can work alongside your vCIO to connect security priorities with the broader technology roadmap.

Choosing a model

Fully Managed or Co-Managed?

Both run on the same operating baseline and the same closed loop. The difference is who holds the keyboard.

The right IT support model depends on your team’s capacity and how much responsibility you want to retain. Fully managed IT puts Compass in charge of agreed daily operations. Co-managed IT supports your internal team with clearly defined responsibilities. Both connect everyday support with long-term technology planning, and your engagement can evolve as your staffing and business needs change.

FAQs

Strategic Answers Regarding Fully-Managed IT Services

Effective technical partnerships require absolute transparency and a shared commitment to operational stability. Leaders evaluating full IT outsourcing ask these questions most often.

What are fully managed IT services?

Fully managed IT services give your organization an outsourced IT department responsible for operating and supporting your technology within an agreed scope. CompassMSP covers 24/7 end-user support, endpoint and server management, patching, network administration, Microsoft 365 management, cloud administration, backup oversight, access management, vendor coordination, and documentation. A dedicated vCIO guides technology planning. Essentials, the Compass security baseline, is included with Managed IT.

Who is fully managed IT right for?

Fully managed IT suits organizations without internal IT staff, those relying on one overloaded person, or businesses where technology support falls to someone in finance, operations, or leadership. It provides access to ongoing support and specialist expertise without building an entire department internally. If you already have an IT team and want to retain its operational role, co-managed IT services may be a better fit.

What is the difference between fully managed and co-managed IT?

Fully managed IT puts Compass in charge of the day-to-day operation of your supported environment. Co-managed IT divides responsibilities between Compass and your internal staff, addressing needs such as after-hours coverage, cloud expertise, or patch management. Both use shared account intelligence and the same closed-loop delivery model. The agreement defines who handles each responsibility, with project work scoped separately.

Does fully managed IT mean we lose control of our technology?

No. You retain business decision authority over budgets, priorities, and changes requiring your approval. Compass takes responsibility for executing the agreed IT services and maintaining the documentation needed to support them. Your agreement should clearly define administrative access, data and license ownership, documentation availability, and transition assistance if the relationship ends. These responsibilities should be established during discovery and service planning.

How much does fully managed IT cost compared to hiring internally?

The comparison depends on your environment, coverage needs, and the expertise you would otherwise need to hire. Internal IT costs include salary, benefits, recruitment, training, software, and coverage during absences. Fully managed IT combines support, engineering, and vCIO planning into a recurring service fee, with additional security tiers and projects priced separately.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ salary data for network and systems administrators provides a starting point for estimating internal staffing costs. Compare the complete cost and scope of both options, including the planning value of a dedicated vCIO, rather than assuming outsourcing will always cost less.

What happens during onboarding?

Onboarding establishes the operating baseline your Compass team will use to support the business. It begins with discovery: documenting systems, reviewing access and licenses, identifying immediate risks, and confirming responsibilities. The next phase establishes monitoring, patching, backup oversight, and the Essentials security baseline. Your vCIO then prioritizes improvements and develops the technology roadmap.

Timing depends on your environment and transition requirements. Your onboarding plan defines milestones, the support start date, and any interim coverage. Discuss your transition with Compass to establish those details before service begins.

Is security included or does it cost extra?

Essentials, the CompassMSP security baseline, is included with fully managed IT. It provides security hygiene and protection, patching, backup oversight, telemetry, and a defined escalation path. Dedicated 24/7 SOC monitoring is available through Core Defense. Complete Security adds deeper human-led investigation, continuous forensics, and proactive threat hunting through the Apex Security Platform.

These additional services connect with the environment Compass already supports. Incident response beyond the included detection and response scope requires a separate retainer-based engagement.

Where is your support team located?

CompassMSP’s security operations center is 100% U.S.-based for detection, triage, investigation, and containment. Managed IT service desk and engineering teams operate a blended U.S. and Philippine follow-the-sun model to provide around-the-clock support. These are separate functions: dedicated SOC coverage depends on your selected security tier. Compass also maintains a regional U.S. presence for on-site support, subject to your location and agreement.

Do you provide on-site support?

Yes. Compass provides on-site support through its U.S. locations when work requires a physical presence, such as troubleshooting hardware or supporting network equipment. Your agreement defines included visits, dispatch arrangements, and any additional charges. Office moves, new site builds, and planned technology improvements are separately scoped projects. Remote support remains available for issues that can be addressed without a visit.

Will you work with our existing tools and vendors?

Compass reviews your existing platforms during discovery and confirms which can be supported within the engagement. That includes environments using Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS, and other cloud and infrastructure platforms. When a tool creates a security, compatibility, or supportability gap, Compass explains the recommended change and its business case.

Vendor coordination is part of the agreed service scope. Product support deadlines, including those in Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance, help inform replacement and migration decisions.

What if we hire internal IT later?

Your engagement can evolve into co-managed IT. Compass and your new IT leader agree on responsibilities, access, escalation, and the support your team still needs. Existing documentation and the technology roadmap provide continuity while that division of work changes. Tooling, coverage, and pricing are reviewed as part of the transition; project delivery remains separately scoped.

Can fully managed IT support regulatory compliance?

Yes. Managed IT can support technical controls and the records used to demonstrate their operation, including patch history, access changes, backup checks, configuration records, and incident documentation. Compass’s Compliance & Risk Management practice provides separately scoped assessments, remediation planning, readiness support, and audit preparation for applicable requirements.

Managed IT alone does not establish compliance or replace an independent assessment or certification. For example, the HIPAA Security Rule requires administrative, physical, and technical safeguards. Operating the technology supports part of that responsibility; policies, governance, and workforce practices also matter.

How do I get started?

Schedule a discovery conversation with CompassMSP about your environment, who handles IT today, and where support is falling short. Compass uses that discussion to define the next assessment steps and recommend a service scope, security tier, and transition approach. Your proposal establishes responsibilities, coverage, onboarding milestones, and any separately scoped work before the engagement begins.
